John & Iain’s Box Trailer Build – Ferocious1

Father and son team, John and Iain, from Brisbane built this 7×4 Box Trailer over a few weekends. Using our single axle box trailer plans they set out to build a trailer which would mainly be used for family camping trips and generally carting things around the place from time to time. John opted for 500 high zinc annealed panels and bought a suitable body kit online which included four sides, floor, mudguards, gussets and rear channel.

The guys shared the workload throughout the box trailer build and Iain quickly learned the arts of cutting, grinding, welding, painting to name but a few. They mounted the spare wheel under the box on an automotive style spare wheel winch, freeing up the drawbar for a fully sealed alloy toolbox. John fitted a few floor mounted tie-down latches as well as external tie-down rails. Allowance was made to fit overhead racks at a later stage.

A large off-road style jockey wheel compliments the DO35 coupling which greatly enhances towing performance. The trailer was dubbed “Ferocious1” half way through the build, which might have had something to do with working away in the shed during an unforgivable Brisbane summer.

The entire build was captured on time-lapse video so that they can re-live the experience in 2½ minutes

The trailer was splendidly finished off with an undercoat of etch primer followed by a hammertone top coat.

Well done guys. It’s looking really good.
